My Story

I firmly believe that a plurilingual world is a better world; a world that fosters empathy, respect, and inclusivity."

Montecristi, República Dominicana

Dear friend,

Welcome to hispaniola. This is my long but hopefully motivating story. Let me present myself and share my personal experiences with you. I like to bond with my learners from the very beginning as I know it makes the learning process easier.

I was raised and lived in Greece until I finished University. I started studying Spanish as a hobby while at the University, and I never imagined that learning Spanish would change my life so drastically.

I always liked studying foreign languages and with time my interest in the Spanish culture and language grew stronger, so I tried to grab every opportunity to become more fluent. I stayed in Spain for six months as an Erasmus student (the best months of my life!) and later got a scholarship for a Master’s degree in Madrid.  I stayed in Madrid longer than expected (who wouldn’t!). In Madrid, I met my husband who is from the Dominican Republic. I taught Spanish as a foreign language as a freelance teacher from 2004 to 2010, while spending some years living in different countries and continents (Burkina Faso in West Africa, Guatemala, and Greece). In 2010 I founded hispaniola, but in 2012 our family plans changed, and I settled in the Dominican Republic with my husband and our three children.

In the Dominican Republic, I had the chance to continue working in the education field as a Natural Science and Social Studies teacher (in Spanish) in a Montessori private Primary School for seven years. Then I worked as a Social Studies teacher in a Secondary School for two years until I moved to Panama City.

During my stay in the Dominican Republic, I was able to continue my studies in Education.  I did a specialization in Montessori Education for preschool and primary students. My experience as a Montessori guide shaped how I teach and relate with my students. It taught me to be more patient and organized and to observe in amazement the independence, responsibility, and critical thinking students acquire in a Montessori classroom.

As I´m curious by nature and like learning new things and improving my skills, in 2019 I finished a MicroMasters degree in Online Course Design, by pure coincidence just before the pandemic started. The course helped me to easily adapt my lessons to an e-learning environment, although I don´t deny it has been a challenge to keep 9-year-old students engaged with online classes!

In 2022, I opted for a career change.  I founded hispaniolaspanishcourses.com and took a plunge into the solopreneur world, a swift change that transformed my life. To be honest, 2022 was a very challenging year for me. On one hand, I was thrilled to be able to manage my time, organize my schedule, sense the freedom of being my own boss; and on the other hand, running an online business turned into a trial-and-error adventure.

However, in 2023 I was in for a big surprise. I found what I have been looking for: an approach that would allow me to reach my full potential, stay firm to my Montessori and Active Learning principles, and give my learners the personalized guidance they need.

So, I became a certified and accredited Neurolanguage Coach® and I firmly believe that there is no going back.
